Ventersburg - Lejweleputswa - Free State |
Ventersburg…Fresh Country Air, rural peacefulness, tranquility and Free State hospitality…Welcome to the heartland of the Free State! Ventersburg is situated on the N1 highway between Bloemfontein & Kroonstad & is the agricultural centre for the surrounding areas. P. A Venter originally owned the farm Kromfontein on which Ventersburg was developed. His son, B G Venter inherited this land in 1857 & allowed it to be used initially as a church centre & then later for the community that grew around the church. The town was established in 1864. Ventersburg offers its visitors a number of historical & worth while sights. The scenic Allemanskraal Dam offers great recreational facilities. The area surrounding the dam has been converted into the beautiful Willem Pretorius Game Reserve where visitors can discover the natural world within. The police museum in Ventersburg is the only police station in South Africa which is fully restored & claims national heritage status as from 30 May 1987. This museum is the only of its kind in the Free State & one of four countrywide. The Sand River Convention monument is 15km from the town en-route to Winburg. It was at this spot that the legendary Sandriver-convention was signed between the Boers & the English proclaiming the local inhabitants independent from the crown. Join in the Wildlife Festival Marathon. A unique marathon where the athletes run through Willem Pretorius Reserve during the annual wildlife auction. This is a qualifying event for the Comrades. |
