Thaba 'Nchu - Motheo - Free State - South Africa

Thaba Nchu, in the Free State, is a small town lying at the foot of the 2138m high Thaba Nchu (Black Mountain).

This settlement lies at the foot of the well-known Thaba Nchu mountain, also known in the local Tswana language as ’black mountain“ and is considered to be the spiritual homeland of the Tswana people. Chief Moroka with a number of the Barolong tribe settled here in the early 1830s. In the late 1873 it became home to Chief Moshoeshoe and the Basotho nation.

Thaba Nchu has two special attractions, the Mmabana cultural centre, which exhibits and sells works by local artists, and the Maria Moroka Game Reserve, situated at the foot of the mountain. This is the ideal spot for game viewing, picnicking, environmental education, fishing, game drives and bird watching.
