Edenburg - Xhariep - Free State |
Edenburg, nestled in the golden prairies alongside the country's busiest National road, sets its own pace as a prosperous sheep & cattle farming town.
Edenburg, situated 83km south-west of Bloemfontein, was founded on 24 February 1862 when the farm Rietfontein was purchased to build a church. The first application for recognition as a town was turned down by the Volksraad, but proclamation was eventually granted on 4 March 1863.
Municipal status was won in 1891. The origin of the name is unclear. The most likely explanation is that it is a reference to the Garden of Eden of the Bible. However, there are those who believe that it is an Afrikaans version of Edinburgh in Scotland.
The economy of the town & 2000 square km district is based on sheep & cattle ranching. From the rural part of Freestate’s Edenburg, the sight of a donkey cart in commute is nothing strange & lends towards the romance of the town.
A friendly, cozy ladies bar welcomes one to refreshment throughout the day & one can enjoy big screen sport broadcasts. On some nights, one can enjoy local ballroom dancing as well as 'Sokkie’ (traditional Afrikaner dancing) dances at the pub. Songs vary from ‘Boere’ (farmers) music, Afrikaans chart toppers to other genres of preference.
The library serves as an information bureau & is next to the beautiful Victorian town hall. A large Dutch Reformed Church towers over all & landmarks a focal point to get your way around town.
